Duke associate head coach Steve Wojciechowski has reached an agreement in principle to become the next head coach at Marquette, a source told CBSSports.com on Tuesday.
The university confirmed the hiring in a press release.
“I come from an environment where the expectation is to win, and that is why I chose Marquette,” Wojciechowski said in the release. “I am particularly impressed with Marquette’s investment in men’s basketball and I’m thrilled to join an institution with so much rich history in both basketball and academic excellence. Having been a student-athlete, I know first-hand what it takes to succeed both on and off the court, and I bring tremendous passion when it comes to shaping our players into successful athletes and men.”
At his press conference Tuesday, the new MU coach even made a good-natured crack at his former boss.

CBSSports.com previously reported that Wojciechowski interviewed with Marquette early Monday about replacing Buzz Williams, and the 37-year-old former McDonald's All-American became the front-runner late Monday when CBSSports.com reported that Tennessee's Cuonzo Martin had removed his name from consideration. This development means Duke coach and Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, college basketball's all-time winningest coach, now has 12 former players or assistants who have become Division I head coaches.
Williams left Marquette on March 21.
He's now the head coach at Virginia Tech.
