There are at least two NFL teams seriously exploring moves to Los Angeles by the 2015 season – Oakland and St. Louis – but, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, only one of them could actually play at the preferred interim location for any relocating NFL team – the Rose Bowl.

While the Pasadena government has enacted changes in recent years that would allow the number of games played at the Rose Bowl to increase as well as secure the necessary infrastructure to house an NFL team on an interim basis, it could not do so for two teams seeking to play there for a few years under such circumstances.

Some within the NFL believe it could be ideal to have two teams head to LA at the same time, as they share the risk and rewards associated with stadium development and construction, but one of them, under such a circumstance, would have to play elsewhere. One possibility is the less desirable Los Angeles Coliseum.

Currently, the Raiders and Rams do not have leases at their current stadiums beyond this season, and continuing to go year-to-year under these circumstances is seen as untenable for both clubs, sources said. Teams have until February to file paperwork indicating their formal intent to relocate for the 2015 season, and sources said it remains possible one or more could do so, with the teams and the NFL and its stadium and finance committees seeking possible solutions to get franchises established in Los Angeles.
