Stanford coach David Shaw remains very high on the radar of several NFL teams, but league sources and some close to the coach believe there is little to no chance he leaves the college program to enter the pro ranks.
Shaw has a strong NFL background but loves Stanford and the ability to compete nationally there and those sources don’t see him leaving the Bay Area for quite some time, if at all, despite the degree of NFL pursuit that is anticipated.
Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin is another college coach who will be coveted by several NFL teams -- USC, for one, is a college program that is high on him, too -- and he could end up being a more viable option, particularly for teams more married to the spread and read-option game.
Sumlin has strong ties to the Houston area from his time coaching there, and several execs from other NFL teams are already wondering if that is his eventual landing spot (with his quarterback Johnny Manziel, perhaps a future Texan as well with the team possibly in the market for a new starter as well).
Sumlin could end up having a particular appeal to the Redskins, with spread quarterback Robert Griffin III. It did not go unnoticed in NFL circles recently when RG3’s college coach, Art Briles, was given a 10-year extension by Baylor, with his affinity for and strong relationship with RG3 no secret, and the quarterback’s degree of closeness with his owner, Dan Snyder, also no secret.
