Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is one of the most underpaid dudes in the NFL, checking in at 41st in terms of quarterback pay. That's below Charlie Whitehurst, Blaine Gabbert, Ryan Mallett, Matt Moore and more.
So naturally when Wilson joined Adam Gold and Joe Ovies on 99.9 The Fan (who played Ciara for his introduction, which is beyond hilarious) to talk about his upcoming Passing Academy in Raleigh he was asked about the standoff between he and the team when it comes to his contract.
"At the end of the day I trust the process. I know God's going to put me wherever he wants to have me. I hope that Seattle ... I love it there, it's a great place to play. I've also gone through the ups and downs and been moved around before," Wilson said. "Just like I love N.C. State and love playing there ... having to go somewhere else and start new. Ultimately I know mentally and physically and spiritually I'm prepared for whatever. Every day I'm going to go to work. I'm not the type of player to hold out because I want to be the best player I can be."
"In terms of the contract talks, I guess it's a blessing. I'm thankful to be in this position. I'm one of 32 men in the world that get to do what I get to do. I'm really thankful."
Classic Russell. There's nothing here, per se, even though he definitely made a point about moving on in the past. He was HUGE at N.C. State. Huge. ACC Player of the Year as a freshman. Set the national record for passing attempts without an interception. Beat North Carolina every year he played. He was going to be a bonafide Wolfpack rep for the rest of his life and now he's largely considered a Wisconsin guy. He knows how to deal with being shunned and moving on.
So there's nothing said and yet a message being sent in this public back-and-forth between the Seahawks and Wilson when it comes to his contract.
Interestingly at the end, Gold tried to get Wilson to bite on a question about the Patriots and the final play of the Super Bowl. Wilson started out with "They've got a great quarterback and a great coach" and typical Wilson answer stuff. Gold started laughing about trying to get one over on him and Wilson
"You never will. You guys have tried. What is it, eight years now?" Wilson said. "You guys are probably 0 for 100."
And then Ovies kind of DID get Wilson. He asked him why people care so much about his transfer story and Wilson opened up about rejuvenating the program, graduating early, beating Carolina, winning "a lot of cool, crazy football games here" and a bunch of other stuff.
You never hear Wilson open up but it was interesting to see him actually kind of reminisce about his college days. And even better, joke about his ability to answer interviews in a robotic fashion.
