A Washington Post report emerged a few days ago in which it was stated that Redskins coach Jay Gruden was done with quarterback Robert Griffin III and that there was a good chance Griffin wouldn't be on the Washington roster next season.
"Through three preseason games and five starts in the regular season, Gruden has seen enough to realize that Griffin is at best a long-term project as a pocket passer," wrote Post columnist Jason Reid. "Griffin was too deliberate reading defenses, displayed poor footwork and an alarming lack of pocket presence for a signal-caller in his third NFL season. Also, Gruden's assessment goes deeper than Griffin's play. He has major concerns about Griffin's decision making off the field."
But on Saturday, the Post put out another report saying that Redskins owner Daniel Snyder might keep Griffin and instead fire Gruden.
That's because -- again, according to Reid -- Snyder and general manager Bruce Allen badly want to see Griffin succeed (probably because the team spent so much capital on him to draft him No. 2 overall).
"Although it’s unknown whether Snyder and Allen eventually will agree to trade Griffin, what has become clear from recent conversations with Redskins officials is that Gruden believes he needs a clean break from Griffin to focus on fixing Washington’s 3-9 mess," Reid wrote. "And if Snyder and Allen commit to Griffin as the starter in 2015, Gruden could be 'one and done,' a team official said, alluding to Gruden possibly being fired despite four years remaining on his guaranteed five-year contract."
In other words ... sigh.
