Running back Trent Richardson hasn't produced much for the Colts since being traded to Indianapolis on Sept. 18. In the 10 games since joining the team, Richardson has averaged only three yards per carry and hasn't topped 60 yards rushing in any game.
The lack of production from Richardson caused the Colts to bench him on Sunday against the Titans and start Donald Brown instead. Richardson isn't bitter about being benched though, he actually thinks it's fair that Brown took his starting job.
"I think it's only fair that Donald is the starter, especially the production he's been putting up and the numbers," Richardson said, via ESPN.com. "He's been playing good ball. I tell people all the time that when I first got here, they thought it was a two-headed monster with me and Ahmad Bradshaw I always said it was a three-headed monster."
Before Sunday's game against the Titans, Richardson had started eight out of the nine games he had played with the Colts. The only game he didn't start was a Sept. 22 game against San Francisco that was played just four days after the Colts sent their 2014 first-round draft pick to Cleveland for him. Needless to say, being benched isn't something the No. 3 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft is very familiar with.
"It was different when I went out there Sunday," Richardson said. "It was kind of like this is a place in your life where you have to learn and really see the offense and how things flow. I learned about myself Sunday, how humbling it was. I have to step up. I have to make sure I'm doing my job."
In the Colts past four games combined, Richardson has only rushed for 58 yards total, compared to Brown, who had 54 yards alone in his start against the Titans. Richardson knows he's not producing, but he said he'll play better soon.
"It's going to happen," Richardson said. "Over these last two weeks I was able to sit down and dig my head into it. Right now I feel good."
It shouldn't be too difficult for Richardson to improve his numbers, the 23-year-old running back hasn't topped 22 yards in any of the Colts five games since Nov. 1.
