Steve Spurrier and Will Muschamp both disputed an Internet report Friday that Muschamp had been hired as South Carolina's new defensive coordinator and potential coach-in-waiting, with Spurrier saying he had not yet made any changes to his Gamecocks staff.

"No, I haven't hired Will," Spurrier told The State. "I haven't really talked to anybody about additions [to the staff]."

247Sports' JC Shurburtt reported Friday that Muschamp had personally denied the report to 247Sports. Per Shurburtt and other outlets, Muschamp is currently vacationing with his family in the Dominican Republic.

Scout affiliate Gamecock Pride reported early Friday that Muschamp's arrival as South Carolina's new defensive coordinator was a "done deal," with "the opportunity to be South Carolina's Head Coach when Spurrier retires" the primary incentive behind Muschamp's decision.

The former Florida coach is reportedly weighing offers from both Auburn and Texas A&M to become those team's (well-paid) defensive coordinator, though those reports indicated no decision would be immediately forthcoming, and ESPN further reports it will wait until after Muchamp's vacation. Spurrier echoed that timetable, saying, "From what I hear, Will is going to wait for everything to settle down."

Per Shurburtt's report, Auburn is currently "the frontrunner for his services," but that a coach-in-waiting offer from the Gamecocks might change his position. Associated Press reporter Mark Long has likewise pointed out that Muschamp has stronger family ties to the Columbia area than Auburn.
