UPDATE: Texas Tech defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt announced his resignation for personal reasons Thursday afternoon.

Texas Tech is now on its sixth defensive coordinator in the past six years after firing defensive coordinator Matt Wallerstedt Thursday. Multiple outlets have confirmed the news, originally reported by CoachingSearch.com, and the school is expected to make it official Thursday afternoon.

Wallerstedt joined the Texas Tech staff last season, coming over from Texas A&M along with Kliff Kingsbury.

And while Wallerstedt's dismissal shouldn't come as a surprise given Texas Tech's defensive performance in its first three games (has allowed 36.7 points per game and 5.13 yards per play), according to one report this move wasn't made because of Wallerstedt's job performance.

ESPN.com's Jake Trotter reports that Wallerstedt lost his job because he "was suspected of being at the school's football building while under the influence of an unknown substance."

According to FootballScoop.com, co-defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Mike Smith will assume the role for the remainder of the season. A graduate of Texas Tech in 2004, Smith is in his second year on the Red Raiders' staff.
