While the first questions asked of Auburn coach Gus Malzahn were about the status of Nick Marshall after his recent run-in with the law, there was some big news that Malzahn dropped during his press conference at SEC Media Days Monday.

Defensive end Carl Lawson had surgery for a torn ACL in May.

Malzahn says he's hopeful that Lawson will recover before the end of the season, but odds are that's not the case. Lawson is likely going to miss the entire 2014 season, which would be bad news for the Auburn defense.

Lawson was a five-star recruit in Auburn's 2013 recruiting class, and he didn't wait long to have an impact for the Tigers. As a freshman in 2013 Lawson finished the year with only 20 tackles, but 7.5 of them were for loss, and four were sacks. He also had seven quarterback hurries and forced two fumbles.

He was expected to contribute even more in 2014 as the Tigers look to defend their SEC title.
