Michigan State senior Denzel Valentine, a leading candidate for National Player of the Year, will miss 2-3 weeks with a knee injury suffered while attempting a layup in Sunday night's practice, coach Tom Izzo said Monday.

Izzo said Valentine had surgery to repair torn cartilage Monday morning.

"Very minor," Izzo added.

Valentine is averaging 18.5 points, 8.3 rebounds and 7.1 assists.

He'll be replaced in the starting lineup by West Virginia transfer Eron Harris.

Michigan State is 12-0 and ranked No. 1 in the AP poll, Coaches poll and Top 25 (and one). The Spartans next game is Tuesday night vs. Oakland. They won't play another currently ranked team until they face Maryland on Jan. 23.
