UNLV freshman Derrick Jones Jr. is living up to the hype as one of the best dunkers in college basketball. On Monday night Jones got the fans in Thomas & Mack on their feet late in the Rebels' 107-45 blowout win against New Mexico Highlands with this soaring one-handed slam.

Three things to note about this insane dunk:

1. Jones takes off from the very edge of the lane while in line with the MW logo. My guess is that he's about 10-12 feet away from the basket, if not more. That kind of high-flying dunk would be impressive in the open court, and this is in traffic.

2. Well, about that traffic ... So if you watch carefully the NMHU defender does a "swinging gate" kind of movement to avoid contact with Jones once he's airborne. I can't criticize the man too much for sliding so slightly out of the way. It was already a 50-point game and any fouls would just delay the opportunity to get out of there.

3. The best news is that Derrick Jones Jr. will be doing this all season. UNLV's freshman star already dunked over people at Rebel Madness and threw down a nasty alley-oop in the opener against Cal Poly. Start flagging these UNLV games on your hoops watching schedule because you never know when Jones will explode with another highlight-worthy dunk.
