Oakland University basketball players Duke Mondy and Dante Williams have both been released from jail after being charged with felony rape in California, Oakland coach Greg Kampe told CBSSports.com's Matt Norlander on Friday. All charges against the players will be dropped, according to Kampe.
"They will be appropriately suspended upon review of the situation," said Kampe, who added that Mondy and Williams met the alleged victim at Wednesday's Clippers game at Staples Center. "This was more than going past curfew, more than breaking of team policy. It’s more than that. I take it very seriously, am apologetic to our fans, apologetic to college basketball that something like this would happen."
Mondy and Williams were arrested and charged with felony rape early Thursday in Culver City, Calif., -- two days after Oakland lost at UCLA. They had remained in California with their teammates because the Golden Grizzlies are scheduled to play at California on Friday night. Kampe said Mondy and Williams will now be flown back to Michigan and will not be with the team for the game against the Bears at Haas Pavilion on Friday night or for the game against No. 15 Gonzaga at the McCarthey Athletic Center on Sunday night.
Mondy is averaging 10.5 points, 6,0 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 4.0 steals per game.
He started his college career at Providence.
Williams is averaging 16.5 minutes per game.
