KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Cameras captured Royals catcher Salvador Perez with what looked like some sort of brownish substance on his right shin guard during Game 1 of the World Series. It became a Twitter controversy, with some suggesting this was a second pine tar game involving the Royals. But both teams said it was much ado about nothing.

And so it was.

"That's not illegal. It's only illegal if a pitcher has it, not a catcher," said Royals manager Ned Yost, who added that he didn't know what it was.

Perez wasn't available after the game, but that was more likely because of the emotions involved on a night when Royals starting pitcher Edinson Volquez lost his father.

The Mets generally had nothing to say about the substance, and Mets people said they believe it was only something to help Perez get a grip to throw. Mets manager Terry Collins actually said, "It's nothing."

And so there remains only one pine tar incident in Royals history that's worth noting.
