Infielder/outfielder Ben Zobrist has agreed to terms with the Cubs on a four-year contract worth $56 million. CBS Sports MLB Insider Jon Heyman has confirmed the deal. Heyman also reports that Zobrist has a no-trade provision for the first three years of the deal.

Zobrist, 34, is coming off a 2015 season for the Athletics and Royals in which he batted .276/.359/.450 with 13 homers and 36 doubles in 126 games. Zobrist for his career owns an OPS+ of 117, and he has been a remarkably consistent offensive performer since 2011. Zobrist has manned seven different positions in his career and is still capable of providing plus defense at second, third and either outfield corner. With the Cubs, he figures to slot in as the regular second baseman.

The acquisition of Zobrist frees up the Cubs to perhaps shop incumbent second baseman Starlin Castro, as was widely rumored before this acquisition.

Zobrist was also highly coveted by the Mets, who were the reported runner-up for his services.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports first reported the agreement.
