This past October, gifted young Cardinals outfielder Oscar Taveras and his girlfriend died tragically in a car crash in the Dominican Republic. Now the Cardinals are making plans to honor Taveras. Here's this from CBS St. Louis:

Team owner Bill DeWitt Jr. says some of the money raised during this weekend’s Cardinals Care Winter Warm Up will be spent by the team’s charity arm on a youth ball field in Taveras’ hometown of Sosua in the Dominican Republic, “He was a real hero in that area. A lot of young boys dream of making it to the Major Leagues, and we want them to try to fulfill their dreams.”

This is a fitting gesture. Taveras' native Dominican Republic is of course a miraculously rich source of baseball talent, but the baseball infrastructure outside of the academies is quite lacking. This seems like an excellent way to honor Taveras and to provide some tangible uplift to his hometown.

Elsewhere, a uniform patch is reportedly also in the works:

Taveras would've turned 25 years old on June 19.
