Braves' Kris Medlen leaves game with right forearm strain

Braves ace Kris Medlen left Sunday afternoon's game with an arm injury after throwing a pitch. Replays showed him grabbing his elbow.

UPDATE: Medlen has been diagnosed with a right forearm strain, the Braves announced. He will be examined further on Monday. Forearm strains are known to be indicators of an elbow problem.

Potentially bad news for the Braves: ace right-hander Kris Medlen left Sunday's start after throwing a pitch. Replays showed him grabbing at his elbow one pitch before the pitch that resulted in the injury. He walked right to the dugout and left the game after. Here's the pitch before the injury:

Medlen, 28, had Tommy John surgery back in August 2010, but otherwise he's been pretty healthy throughout his career. In 31 starts (and one relief appearance) last season, he went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA (124 ERA+). Medlen was a candidate to start opening day.

Braves' left-hander Mike Minor has been slowed by a shoulder problem in camp and has not yet appeared in a game, so the pitching injuries are starting to mount. Alex Wood, Brandon Beachy and Freddy Garcia are in the rotation mix behind Medlen, Minor and Julio Teheran.

The Braves have not yet released an update or any information about the nature of Medlen's injury, so stay tuned.
