Seth Rollins, WWE's reigning World Heavyweight Champion since March, tore multiple ligaments in his right knee at a recent live event in Dublin, Ireland, and will be forced to forfeit his title, the company announced Thursday.

With the belt set to be vacant just over two weeks before one of WWE's four major pay-per-view events, Survivor Series, the company announced that a tournament will take place with a new champion set to be crowned at the event on Nov. 22.

Rollins tore his right ACL, MCL and medial meniscus, injuries that will sideline the 29-year-old burgeoning superstar for 6-9 months, according to WWE.

After winning the title in shocking fashion at WrestleMania 31, Rollins has defended it often on television and pay-per-view events over the last eight months as he's been moved into position as one of the company's primary superstars.

Rollins was scheduled to defend the strap against Roman Reigns, his former stablemate, at Survivor Series. Instead, Rollins will relinquish the belt and the company will hold a tournament with a new champion being named at its conclusion.

WWE has not released additional details at this time.
